Well the year of #BlackGirlMagic continued last night with the 2016 MTV Video Music Awards filled with performances from the industry’s most influential women. Here are 5 times that our screen poofed out magic melanin dust.

1. Nicki Minaj Spins with Ariana Grande

As if you couldn’t avoid all the new Soul Cycle studios popping up in a neighborhood near you, now it’s on your screen…during an awards show. Ariana Grande performed her single “Side to Side,” and her ponytail was the loud instructor. The pop song, infused with a reggae undertone beat was carried with Nicki Minaj’s natural island flow. Even if you weren’t a fan of the performance, never be mad at Nicki for getting her coins and representing for the ladies.

2. Rihanna Brought An Entire Neighborhood On Stage

As recipient of the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award, Rihanna had to perform FOUR sets and we were a fan of all of them. If we had to pick a favorite, it would be the medley of “Rude Boy” “What’s My Name?” and “Work.” It looks like she drove her coach bus through Flatbush Avenue in Brooklyn and told all the Caribbean men in fishnet jersey tops and women in batty (booty) rider shorts to hop on board and show off their whining skills on stage. It’s the set she looked the most natural and had the most fun with. Then at the end of the night, she was presented the premiere award by her bestie, Aubrey.

3. Beyonce Served Fresh Squeezed Lemonade and Quenched Our Thirst

We all were looking forward to Beyonce’s performance and she didn’t disappoint. For nearly 16 minutes, she captivated all singing hits from her visual album “Lemonade,” which took home six awards, including “Video of the Year” for “Formation.” From breaking cameras to lighting the stage on fire, she gave the audience and viewers a great show. She also brought the mothers of victims of gun violence, including Trayvon Martin, Oscar Grant and Eric Garner to the Red Carpet, making a bold statement before even hitting the stage.

4. Teyana Taylor Gave Us #BodyGoals for #Summer17

Following Kanye’s brief rant, he debuted his video for the song “Fade,” featuring a very familiar face, although many publications and blogs went in a frenzy trying to figure who Teyana Taylor was. We all know the 25-year-old new mother always had a great body before her pregnancy but seeing her in the video doing a “Flashdance” like scene but dancing to an Afrobeat riddim just made us happy to see her out there shining in body oil and on the VMA stage. Hopefully we’ll see her actually perform on the stage in the future because she deserves it.

5. Alicia Keys Spoke Out on the Mic

Alicia used her opportunity on the mic to say some powerful words beyond the music last night. She recognized that it was the 53rd anniversary of the “I Have A Dream” speech and recited, even singing a little bit, an emotional poem about love and equality of all people.

All in all, the MTV VMA’s this year was a good show. The best part was that it was held for the first time ever at Madison Square Garden in New York City. Until next year folks!
