Bullying has undeniably increased since social media erupted on the internet. We now exist in world where your bad hair day can become a permanent fixture in the infinite internet world, and you can become an infamous meme turning you into a laughing stock that may never be cut slack. This can especially be tough for an underprivileged girl who does not have the means to change her conditions.
You may recognize Adi Benson, or Bambi as a beautiful and confident woman that speaks her mind on reality TV shows like Love and Hip-Hop Atlanta, and formerly Basketball Wives LA. Affectionately referred to as “The Bams”, she is the tall and modelesque beauty with the killer physique, beautiful skin and a contagious smile that makes you put down your hater blockers.
Although, she may have experienced a few not so stellar moments on our flat screens, it does not negate that she has a loving and charitable heart that we don’t get to see as we indulge in a little Ratchet TV.
Growing up in Compton, California, Bambi understands the struggles of young women who grow up underprivileged and sometimes have to struggle just to get the necessities needed to get through the day.
“Basic hygiene and being well groomed seems simple to a lot of people, but there are so many people who can’t afford the basic necessities and they are taunted, teased, and bullied,” Bambi shares with Think PYNK exclusively. “This can have a huge effect on these children’s mental health and self-esteem.”
While Bambi was not on the receiving end of bullying, she was known to be the protector of those who were often harassed by bullies. “I was considered a ‘bullies’ bully’ because I can’t stand bullies. In high school, it would bother me to see people picking on the defenseless,” she declares. “By becoming a self-proclaimed ‘bullies’ bully’, I feel like I helped other kids become more confident. I was a popular athlete who took up for kids who were getting picked on, and I’m still that person today.”
No longer defending others with a closed fist or a sharp tongue as she once did in her youth, the beautiful multi-millionaire entrepreneur and founder of Shimmer Elite Extensions, is using her successful hair business to help young women who suffer from clinical issues such as alopecia, cancer and severe burns.
The Shimmer Living Foundation is the driving force behind charitable and educational work to help improve the lives of young girls globally, and sets out to provide disadvantaged and underprivileged girls with life’s necessities, to better ensure their successes in life.
Each year, The Shimmer Living Foundation provides girls with items and resources to minimize the chances of insecurities while participating in school activities, and focusing on their education. Some specific goals the foundation has set are:
- 500 toiletry basket giveaways
- 200 undergarments
- 100 wigs for young female students suffering from hair loss due to clinical causes (i.e. Cancer treatments, alopecia, etc.)
- 100 pairs of shoes
- 4 hygiene seminars (where students will be given useful tips on hygiene, skin care, and basic hair care training)
“It is the greatest feeling to know that I am making a difference in the lives of others. This keeps me motivated and eager to do more,” Bambi beams with pride.
Using her platform of more than two-million followers on Instagram and other social media outlets, she shares her philanthropy in order to inspire others to also give back to their community. “The awareness of what the charity stands for and the amount of support has grown tremendously. I try to involve as many people as I can because there are so many people in need,” she says.
“I strive to ensure that every young girl with humble beginnings knows they are beautiful on the inside and out. And it is my belief that they in turn will be more inclined to pass the positivity forward to those they encounter.”
We are more than proud of Bambi’s philanthropy and we hope that her foundation continues to grow and help with children and their families.
