On Tuesday, the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers kicked off its sixth annual “Women Behind the Music” series—an award series in designed to encourage and recognize women in the music industry by honoring them and their impact on the business. Not only does the series pay respect to the artists, but it also shows appreciation for executives, managers and women of all facets of the industry as well.
This year ASCAP kicked off the series in New York and Los Angeles on October 7. The series will conclude in Atlanta on October 28.
During the ceremony, three women from each city are honored. This year in New York singer/songwriter Jazmine Sullivan, celebrity DJ JaKissa Taylor-Semple and Sam Selolwane, Vice President of Promotions at RCA were honored. In Los Angeles, singer-songwriter K. Michelle, Billboard’s Senior Editor Gail Mitchell, and Motown Record’s Vice President of Creative Relations Myisha Brooks were honored; and the series will wrap in Atlanta with honorees CEO of Mizay Entertainment Debra Antney and entertainment attorney Omara S. Harris.
