LAPD Officer Randy Simmons was a beloved family man and elite SWAT officer who was killed while entering an LA house to save a hostage in 2008. His funeral was attended by an estimated 10,000 people and flags in Canada were flown at half-mast to honor him.
Baumgarten, writer and producer on the family film SMITTY starring Oscar winners Louis Gossett, Jr. and Mira Sorvino, as well as Oscar nominee Peter Fonda, helped develop and write the screenplay for Lisa Simmons after she published her book, 41D: Man Of Valor.
Baumgarten is ecstatic to be on board. “I was hooked by the story of Randy’s family, his community, and how much Randy Simmons gave to everybody and how much he meant to everyone he knew. He was loved by so many people and it’s important to show the world why. I am truly blessed that Lisa and her family believed in me and allowed me to help tell Randy’s amazing story. It could inspire millions of people in a positive way and that’s something I wanted to be part of.”
Lisa Simmons appreciated Baumgarten’s enthusiasm. “We had some Hollywood interest about Randy’s story but Michael saw the bigger picture. We appreciated his passion and his vision for Randy’s story and feel it’s in good hands.”
With the script nearly finished, Lisa Simmons will guide the project as executive producer and Baumgarten will be producing.
“I just wrapped an ark documentary called FINDNG NOAH and am about to direct the family movie THE MARTIAL ART KID. Once I team up with the right producing partners for Randy’s story, I’d like to start pre-production this summer and film this Fall in time for Randy’s annual LAPD 5K run in Los Angeles on October 11, 2014,” says Baumgarten.
