Although justice has not been served and malicious acts of black brutality and bigotry are just as prominent now as they were 50 years ago, it is still important for us to celebrate kindness and selflessness among our community. Yesterday, producer/director Issa Rae created a GoFundMe scholarship account dedicated to Alton Sterling and the beloved family that he left behind. Specifically, the scholarship will help support the family during this time, while also helping send his three young children to college in the future.
In moments like this, it is imperative to acknowledge what star-power and teamwork can do. Hopefully Issa Rae’s courageous act will inspire other cultural leaders and entertainers to follow in her footsteps. The goal was $200k and in only one day 14,241 people (and still counting) exceeded said goal by more than half.
Alton Sterling was shot and killed by two police officers last night in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The incident arose when an anonymous 9-1-1 call was made to the police after there were allegations of a man outside of a convenience store with a gun. Although sources say that Sterling did not appear to be a threat, the police still restrained him and proceeded to shoot him four times in the chest and/or back. The two police officers involved have been placed on administrative leave as they continue to investigate the case.
Our prayers go out to the entire Sterling family.
