Style Strategist, Marlo Hampton has slayed our television screens with her must-have fashion pieces for years. The Real Housewives of Atlanta cast member and 11 Alive’s Atlanta and Co.’s Fashion Contributor took time off from taping her popular web series, Marlo’s closet and stopped by Pynk to show all the girls how to step up our wardrobe game and curate a chic style without going broke!
Marlo has been credited for upgrading a few people’s style and like most Instagrammers we love keeping up with Marlo’s fashions on IG. Despite the fact that the fashionista always looks like she’s spent six figures and more on an outfit, Marlo explains that she actually just knows how to mix things up in a way that gives us a perception of extreme luxury, In fact you would be shocked to know that even Marlo shops in department stores and not just haute couture show rooms.
“To me style is about mixing things up. I love an urban look and a sophisticated look too. I rocked sweatpants from Marshalls the other day and mixed it up with a BCBG Burgundy top and Louis Vuitton bag. So its not all about the brands you wear, its how you wear your clothes and more importantly how to really bring an outfit to life by accessorizing. I personally don’t have a style icon but I love Sarah Jessica Parker’s style and I love fashion. I can wear pieces from any designers’ collection. I adore them all but I also love vintage, consignment shops and the Goodwill. You have to just get pieces you like no matter where you find them. To me, the older the better. Clothes come back in style so I hold on to a lot of pieces. When I was growing up my mother had us dressed in the flyest outfits from Goodwill. We were the best dressed kids in the projects. I really credit her with getting me into style and having an eye for fashion.”
Marlo stresses that you don’t have to overspend to look like a million bucks but you do need a few essential items in your closet. “We live in a visual world so how you look is very important. I recommend that in every woman’s closet, she should have, pearls, a fitted black dress, a beautiful white dress, colorful 5 inch pumps, a blazer, denim and a white button up shirt . These essential items can be mixed with a lot of different pieces and with an overdose of accessories you can really glam up your look from drab to fab.”
“You can get a cute dress from Target and add a statement necklace and jewelry to glam it up. You can grab a white button-up from anywhere and a cute skirt with some 5 inch heels and look gorgeous. I’ m very eclectic. I love a jogger with heels. I love starting from scratch and putting a whole lot together.” When Hampton isn’t dressing up her clients and switching up her friends’ style, she enjoys dedicating her time to her “Simply Giving” charity which caters to people and families in need. As far as what her favorite fundraiser is, Hampton says, “anything involving foster kids.” “I aged out of foster care myself so those kids are very close to my heart. I went through a lot when I was younger so I understand what they face. I’ll do whatever I can to bring joy into their lives. For me, its important for people to know that your past doesn’t define you, you can become greater than any of your circumstances by focusing on your future!”
