UCLA gymnast Sophina DeJesus delivered the most bold, unimaginable and urban-esque floor routine that we have ever seen in the strict and structured sport. Over the weekend, the college athlete stunned the audience and the Internet when a video of her floor routines went viral. Not only did the young talent land nearly a perfect score of 9.925 by executing her tumbling, she wowed the crowd with a hip-hop inspired routine featuring the latest dance moved including: “Hit The Quan,” the “dab,” “the whip” and more fun dances.
You may be reading this saying to yourself, “Ohkay…” But its level of significance stems far beyond the mere idea of a black girl doing modern dance moves during a sequence meant for classical routine. Sophina is a representation of the youth. The youth that looks like her, and the best thing about this video are the little girls who will watch it, dance along, and say, “I want to be just like her.”
Sophina, we commend you for being unapologetically YOU. For taking a risk and completely nailing it! #PYNKGirlApproved
