At a very young age, Vonda experimented cutting her cousin’s hair and has been intrigued with versatility since then. “The movement of hair was something that I wanted to understand” Vonda explained. Coming from a two parent home, with her mother being a paralegal and stepfather, a computer engineer– Vonda did not want to take the safe route, “that wasn’t what I wanted” she recalls.
Her passion grew once she decided that she could do more than just cut and braid hair. It was more than hair for Vonda, “once I started researching that hair is a fiber, and how it makes women feel” she knew that this was an innate gift. A pivotal moment for Vonda and her career was when she cut her hair at the salon and was not impressed with how her new look came out. That same year she went to cosmetology school and has taken the hair industry by storm!
The go-to stylist goes in depth about the best part of educating others about hair, “it’s not about a tool, it’s not about a product, but having a pallet strong enough to withstand anything” is her motto! The stylist loves traveling and visiting different salons. Hair is a form of therapy, “I have to touch hair, it’s fulfilling to see” Vonda explains.
Her advice to anyone following their dreams as a stylist is “two things: one, stay true to your passion and two, learn more than how to achieve a look, the scientific basis of hair and ingredients will take you further.” Learning how to curl and flat iron is one thing but knowing the ins and outs will take any hair stylist far in their career because knowledge isn’t a trend.
Young also gave us insight on the things that the hair community lacks and how us as consumers can make a difference. She explains that “knowledge on both ends” make all the difference. Today, people look on YouTube and social media when the hair industry is a touch and feel environment. Vonda Young is dedicated to her mission which explains her extensive experience as an artist, educator and product development specialist.
