PYNK Review: You Should Be Listening To Kehlani’s ‘YSBH’

You don’t have to be a core fan to get on the Tsunami wave because Kehlani’s new mixtape is sounding like a classic and it’s only been about two weeks since its release. If you have any idea who Kehlani is, you probably already know that she dropped some heat for us on April 28th. By this time, countless blogs have already co-signed the 20-year-old singer/songwriter, but PYNK is here to remind you and keep the buzz going.

We first fell in love with BAElani when she dropped Cloud 19 last year—an 8-song compilation of amazingness—and the rest is history. From walking up and down the streets of the Bay area of Cali hustling her mixtape, to working with industry phenoms like Chance The Rapper, BJ The Chicago Kid and more, Lani Tsunami has made it through the struggle and she didn’t need an over-sexualized appearance or “connects” to do so. This gifted songstress made it simply by being uber-talented and by surrounding herself with her loyal Tsunami Mob.

There are 14 songs of straight fire on her new project; my personal top 5 songs including lyrics and production are “The Way” ft. Chance The Rapper, “Alive” ft. Coucheron, “Bright,” “Runnin’,” and “Yet”—in that order. Her music is reminiscent of the early 2000s R&B and pop hits, but with a more up-to-date sound. Kehlani gave us diverse lyrics telling stories of relationships, self-love, and coming up in the music industry—she delivered a piece of work filled with her journey—relatable to anyone going through any struggle. It’s about time 2015 brought some dope tracks and it’s by a woman who’s barely legal!
