From the very first episode of the new drama “Empire”, she (Cookie) walked out through prison gates, in a body-hugging, leopard-print minidress and a white fur coat. The character played by Taraji P. Henson, walked out of prison and into our lives. From that moment, we knew the wardrobe on set was on the money!
If you haven’t tuned into Fox’s new glitzy drama about a hip-hop family based in New York. The patriarch is a rap star looking to entrust the family business to one of his three sons. Well that’s until his ex-wife, is out on early release from jail, and is looking to claim whats rightfully hers.
The highest rated show on Fox, is all about money, power, status, and we couldn’t help but to wonder who was the costume designer behind this ostentatious life style. Costume designer Rita McGhee manages to bring everything that a show of such power needs, on get this, a relatively small budget of 15,000 to $20,000 per episode.
But, who-cares the star character, Cookie, a deceitful diva, is #PYNK’s favorite girl. McGhee has created the perfect look for Cookie, which she calls ” a mix of Sharon Stone in ‘Casino‘ and Diana Ross in ‘Mahogany.”
Episode after episode we fall in love with Cookie a little more, a woman not to messed with, looking to stake her claim on half of her Empire, Cookie is the perfect example of a woman still dressing in her era, in her mind that is, 17 years ago but she’s fierce, clad in leopard prints, plush furs, over accessorized, glam gowns, Cookie is over the top, gaudy yet glamorous, and we love every bit of it!
