Last night at the 87th annual Academy Awards, actress/singer Zendaya Coleman made a red carpet appearance with a super risky and ground-breaking fit styled by Luxury Law. The Shake It Up star put a dramatic twist on her super classic form-fitting Vivienne Westwood gown, complementing it with thick dreadlocks that seemed to cause some controversy amongst many fashion blogs on the web. Luckily, when the alpha magazine of all fashion trends—Vogue—is on your side, you have nothing to worry about. Vogue Magazine labels the 18-year-old talent as the 2015 “breakout style star.”
Just in time, as black history month is ending Zendaya made sure to make a statement and that statement exudes black and proud. Of course, there was discussion of whether or not her hair choice was “appropriate” or not, but the Dancing With the Stars vet is clearly comfortable with her bold hair decision. Her inspiration appears to be from actress Lisa Bonet—beautiful, thick, black and bold dreadlocks down her back.
The Oscars is a show always displaying grace and classic style on the red carpet and although Zendaya’s look may not be a drastic chance to some of us, it definitely was a switch-up for the typical Academy Awards look in the past. Zendaya showed class, grace and innovation when she decided to take this fashion risk. Her actions epitomize exactly what a PYNK girl should stand for—Pretty, Powerful and Provocative.
