2016 was a BIG year for music! We had breakout hits from phenomenal artist like Drake, Rihanna, Chance The Rapper, Remy Ma, and J. Cole to name a few. And with the new year approaching R&B and Hip Hop seem to be taking things to another level.
These two genres of music always find creative ways to recreate themselves and feed the demand for a new sound. This year it was about the melodic fusion of R&B and Hip Hop that gave birth to artist like Bryson Tiller, Tory Lanez, and Drake’s take on being an artist who can do both, sing and rap. And coming into 2017, music is riding this melodic wave and shining light on artist who are for sure going to take 2017 by storm.
So fasten your seat belts because our #PYNKGirlApproved artist to watch for the upcoming year have talent for days. So this post is dedicated to our top five artist we predict will capture your hearts in 2017.
- H.E.R.: The very mysterious R&B singer who reached popularity after Alicia Keys buzzed about her project on social media, Wyclef Jean raved about her talent, and Bryson Tiller posted one of her singles from her EP “Vol.1.” H.E.R., an acronym for Having Everything Revealed, is her idea of making sure the focus stays on the music and that her vulnerability in her art is authentic and true to her sound. The singer has decided to keep her identity under wraps for now but her biggest hit, covering Drake’s “Jungle” is what has the internet buzzing and has led people to believe the singer behind H.E.R. is child star Gabi Wilson. There has not been a definite answer to if this theory is true but what is undeniable is her talent and that’s exactly what will take this artist to new heights in 2017.
2.Kehlani: No stranger to #PYNKMagazine, she had her biggest year in 2015 with her breakout album “You Should Be Here,” featuring hits like N***** and The Way. But, with her sophomore album set to drop at the top of the year, Kehlani proves that there’s no stopping her and her mission to bring that emotional and real R&B back to this generation. Her sound is melodic and soulful with a hint of Hip Hop. And some have even went as far as saying she is this generations Mary J. Blige.
3.A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie: Known for his very own take on Hip Hop called trap-rap, A Boogie has been pushing out hits and features that have gotten him co-signs from heavy hitters in the industry. With his debut mixtape “Artist” hitting the scene this year he has been riding that wave ever sense and he doesn’t have plans on slowing down. His smooth but turn up type of music is exactly what catches this generations ear and provides that modern day feel good music we have been missing.
4.Young M.A: This breakout Brooklyn femcee captured the entire world with her smash hit “OOOUUU” and has people looking at the world of female rappers a little differently. Young M.A brings that rough and raw sound of Brooklyn to her music all while relating to what the people want, which is a catchy hook and dope lyrics. Now working on her follow up to her Sleep Walkin’ mixtape, she is sure to bring the same energy and lyricism into the new year.
5.Dave East: This East Harlem rapper has had quit the big year in 2016 with his multi-million dollar deal with Def Jam, headlining tour, and his freshman class accolades with XXL . His take on bringing Hip Hop back to New York is refreshing and his ability to bring dope lyrics to a bumping beat is what puts that extra style on his New York sound that transcends to music lovers beyond the East Coast. He is definitely someone we can expect the best from in 2017 and with this new move to Def Jam we can expect this underground talent to be big on the mainstream stage.
