Sunday, as we already know, was the Academy Awards, while we focused completely on the red carpet and the great wins, it seems as if “others” were focused on the wrong things.
Zendaya, graced the red carpet in a beautiful white Vivienne Westwood gown and a “faux locs” hairstyle. We love the fearlessness of her get up #PynkGirlApproved. The locs went perfectly with her gown. But, it seems as if Giuliana Rancic, thought it was okay to say a drunk stupor statement while she was sober on the air of E! Fashion Police. Giuliana was clearly out of line, by saying that Zendaya locs looked like she smelled of, “like patchouli oil… Or maybe weed”. Let’s go on the record and say I had to google “patchouli oil”. Giuliana do you know what that is? Or you’re just talking to be talking.
I personally took offense to this, because my father and uncle are Rastafarians. For me it’s not a dread loc thing! It’s the religion I was raised under.. No, I personally do not have dreads, because you don’t have to be dread to be rasta, I however do not have a perm.. It’s a way of life for me, however, I digress this is about how offensive Guiliana’s comment was and how dare she think it was just going to go over as funny..
Although, there were a host of people who jumped on Zendaya team, the 18 year old, didn’t need anyone’s help and here’s what she said:
“There is a fine line between what is funny and disrespectful. Someone said something about my hair at the Oscars that left me in awe. Not because I was relishing in rave outfit reviews, but because I was hit with ignorant slurs and pure disrespect.”
She didn’t stop there she continued to say: that an 18-year-old young woman with locs must smell of patchouli oil or “weed” is not only a large stereotype but outrageously offensive. I don’t usually feel the need to respond to negative things but certain remarks cannot go unchecked.’
Zendaya named a series of role models and family members who have Locs, stating:
I’ll have you know my father, brother, best childhood friend, and all my little cousins have locs. Do you want to know what Ava Duvernay (director of Oscar nominated film Selma), Ledisi (9 time Grammy Award nominated singer songwriter/actress), Terry McMillan (author), Vincent Brown (Professor of African-American studies at Harvard University), Heather Andrea Williams (Historian who also possesses a JD from Harvard University and an MA and PHD from Yale University), as well as many other women and children of all races have in common? Locs. None of which smell of marijuana.” Exactly Guiliana get your life!!!!
After a backlash of social media responses, Guiliana felt compelled to respond or apologize, whatever she wants to call it, but it seems as if Rancic suffers from a bad case of “foot it mouth syndrome”
“Dear @Zendaya, I’m sorry I offended you and others. I was referring to a bohemian chic look. Had NOTHING to do with race and NEVER would!!!” Guiliana shut up please do everyone a favor and shut up!
#PynkGirls own up to it or don’t say it!
