If you love the sun but hate chemicals there are some natural ways to make sure your skin stays hydrated and protected. Of course moderation to sun is key but if your planning on catching some rays on the beach or even spending a few hours at the park you’ll need to protect your skin in order to keep it healthy and glowing.
We consulted Wellness Coach Montez Teferi, owner of Taitu’s Botanicals organic and vegan skin care line to get her top tips on how to maintain healthy and glowing skin all summer long.
Stay Hydrated –Chug down as much H20 as possible. Dehydration is often the cause of summer skin problems and can lead to dull, dry and itch skin.
If you like to add flavor to your water don’t be afraid to make a thirst quenching iced tea. Green tea is packed full of sun-fighting agents. Green tea’s free radical-fighting catechins, EGCG, can reduce skin damage and prevent wrinkles. EGCG has also been shown to revive dying skin cells and promote healthy new ones.
Another one of our favorites is Taitu’s Ginger Peach Tea. This refreshing yet zesty blend is delicious over ice and is full of anti-inflammatory power to aid your digestion and your skin. Research shows that when the digestive system is off, skin can also suffer from breakouts.
Eat your veggies! – Time to stop comfort eating and increase your intake of fruits and vegetables. Tomatoes and sweet potatoes top the list of foods with anti aging properties and these pro-collagen boosters give skin its youthful appearance. Not only do tomatoes protect you against ultraviolet rays, they have also been said to reduce the risk of skin cancer. Find more tips in Montez’s book Exhausted to Energized.
Protect your skin – Using an SPF will provide the most protection but if you’re only briefly in the sun and want to avoid the harmful chemicals consider coconut oil, which contains natural SPF properties, and Shea butter, which naturally protects the skin.
Exfoliate – We all appreciate a summer glow but without proper exfoliation our skin can appear dry and dull. Use a body scrub or a loofah to work on problem areas; these tend to be elbows and knees. Don’t scrub too hard and always follow-up with a thick moisturizing lotion. Exfoliate regularly and get set for smoother, clearer skin.
Nourish – After a day in the sun use a natural oil such as lavender, which has great soothing, and repairing properties. Tea tree oil is also known to relieve pain and reduce peeling and blistering in the case of over exposure to the sun. Taitu’s offers the best of both worlds with their Tea & Tree and Lavender oil and body cream.
Sweet potatoes are jam-packed full of goodness and provide you with a healthy complexion that glows. They can also be boiled and the water can be used as a toner for troublesome skin.
Too much sun exposure can increase your risk for skin cancer and quickly age your skin so exposure should always be monitored and it’s best to limit on a daily basis.
