If you are a millennial, you were probably learning how to walk for the first time when members of N.W.A. were running from the police for the umpteenth time. As you grew up however, MTV and BET educated you on the legendary gangsta rap group, comprised of Dr. Dre, MC Ren, DJ Yella, Ice Cube and the late Eazy-E. Unless you were schooled by your still Kangol wearing uncle, many of us may be familiar with their music, but didn’t know the back story of how the group came together and what ultimately caused them to break apart.
Straight Outta Compton hits theaters nationwide on August 14 and tells the story of how these young men from the dangerous neighborhood of Compton, California used their voices and musical talent to expose their rough living reality to the masses and express their anger of murder, drugs and discrimination. Veteran music video and film director F. Gary Gray, who’s also directed Set It Off, Friday and The Italian Job, put together a stellar cast of actors that are not well-known (yet), but captured the personalities of the artists so well you thought you were watching a documentary and not a biopic. Here’s five reasons why you should check out #StraightOuttaCompton this weekend.
