Major television networks have been investing in a lot of black casted, written and produced films that have been gaining popularity rapidly and leading in the top rated shows. If you don’t know about Empire already, the show chronicles a musically inclined family that hustled in the industry to build the empire that they own—pun intended. The hip hop music and entertainment company, Empire Enterprises, is home to some of the most talented and successful artists in the industry.

Terrence Howard plays Lucious Lyon, a former drug dealer turned hip hop mogul and the CEO of Empire Entertainment, whose life begins to spiral downward when his ex- wife Cookie is released from prison and his past sins begin to revisit and haunt him. In an attempt to keep the company alive, the entire family has to put their best foot forward and come together as a union. Taraji P. Henson plays Cookie Lyon, Lucious’ vibrant and aggressive ex-wife who is the mother of his three boys: Andre Lyon, the oldest son and CFO of Empire, Jamal Lyon the homosexual middle child and singer, and Hakeem Lyon the fame-obsessed baby of the family.

Although you’ve missed some intense drama and the first season is coming to an end March 18, you should still try to catch what’s left of the freshman season and prep for the second season in the works. Here are 5 reasons why you should be watching Empire.

Update: The second season of Empire is set to premiere Wednesdays starting Sept. 23
