Ava DuVernay has been low-key in the entertainment industry for quite some time now, but since the great response from the historical picture Selma, the gorge directher has made a huge name for herself in Hollywood that she cannot hide from. It’s truly an inspiration to see a woman of color reach the level of artistry and stardom that DuVernay has met in her career, which is why her covering the November 2015 issue of ELLE is quite important.
In an inspiring interview, DuVernay discusses her early beginnings in the film industry and how she landed her big break with the Oscar-winning nonfiction story, Selma.
“It was important to me when I took over the film and rewrote the script that there were those silences and spaces where these icons are being people.”
The issue releases on newsstands on October 20 and if you are a true movie head, you will most likely be rushing to the nearest convenience store to pick up a copy. Photographed by Paola Kudacki and styled by Simon Robins, DuVernay wears a silk dress from Calvin Klein Collection and a copper, zinc, and silicium earring from Balmain.
