Prospect Park in Brooklyn, New York was filled with confident women Saturday for the annual natural beauty festival, Curlfest. The event is curated by Curly Girl Collective and it supports the natural hair movement. I had the pleasure of attending for the first time and it won’t be my last.
Hair flowing and bright smiles greeted you as you approached vendors, which had awesome stuff like Ankara skirts, handmade jewelry to vintage pieces. Men were there too supporting the women and having themselves a great time. Discussions were also about fitness and empowerment, how could one not gain from this event.
Tiff McFierce did her thing on the one and twos, as tunes filled the air as soul train lines were formed. It was one big picnic, blankets were spread amongst the grass as people enjoyed each other while have a picnic. The sense of pride and loving yourself was there. Natural hair is more than just saying I’m free of chemically treated my hair, but rather a movement in itself.
Vendors such as Carol’s Daughter, Dark N Lovely to name a few gave out goodies as well as tips on how to maintain your hair. I’m pretty sure everyone will make use of their products at home.
Last but not least fashion also made its statement there definitely. African printed dresses , denim on denim and shirts sets adorned this fabulous women . If you have never been make sure you head out next year. I will definitely be looking forward to it.
